Bald Knees, Etc.

It's hard to post anything after my last somber post. It seems like Debbie's legacy infiltrates anything and everything these days.

That being said, here is something a little lighter for the day...I need your input!
  • What is your favorite cheapest way to celebrate (or decorate for) the holidays?
  • (Ladies,) How in the world do you shave your knees? I'm serious! I have the worst time of it!
  • What is the best book you've read lately and why?
  • Can you name 12 types of cookies or 12 holiday movies? Nick and I are wanting to have the 12 Days of Christmas, baking a different kind of cookie and watching a different holiday movie for the 12 days prior to Christmas. Except, we need a little help coming up with that many!
  • What is your favorite homemade/inexpensive gift to give or receive?

Might I request extra help in the cookie department? My wife is a great cook, and I want to eat TONS of cookies. This Old St. Nick can't be jolly if he's not eating lots of food!

Movies we have thus far:

It's A Wonderful Life
A Christmas Story
Charlie Brown Christmas
White Christmas
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Home Alonen

To add to Nick's list, we also thought of:
Little Women (Nice try, Nick, but I didn't forget!)
Muppets Christmas Carol
Elf
The Family Stone
(Home Alone 2?)

The Family Man, (The old school Rudolph and Frosty movies), The Polar Express, The Santa Claus, Jingle All the Way, Die Hard (they were having an office x-mas party)

As for cheap and inexpensive gifts, last year Angela made some tins with like cinnamon butter or something like that. It was yummy good. It was like honey, butter and brownsugar and cinnamon or something like that.

We had fun seeing you guys too. Buddy liked his cousin. Hope to see you soon !!

Who are you people that forgot How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original cartoon or movie)!? C'mon!

Cheap holiday deco...I buy those $6 mini live Christmas trees from HD and put them all over...you can plant them after the holidays for an eco-friendly project, too.

Fat knees=easy to shave...you must have skinny legs...I hate you!

Books...what are those? I have a 6 mo. old!

Email me(link on my blog profile)...I have a HEAVENLY cookie recipe for you...but you have to like butterscotch chips.

Fave inexpensive gift...ornaments.

Miracle on 34th Street is my favorite! And Serendipity starts and ends on Christmas. :) I'll email you some cookie recipes. And I love ornaments and stationery--homemade or store bought...

Everyone has had great suggestions, but they just threw it out there in a mess for you to decide. You need a schedule to go by:

Day 12) Sugar Cookies - A Christmas Story

Day 11) Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls - How The Grinch Stole Christmas (made for tv-1966)

Day 10) Snickerdoodle - The Santa Clause

Day 9) Gingerbread Men - Home Alone

Day 8) Chocolate Chip - It's a Wonderful Life (a classic with a classic)

Day 7) Butterscotch Sticks - Charlie Brown (the cookies match his shirt, kind of)

Day 6) Hershey Kiss Peanut Butter - Home Alone 2

Day 5) Bourbon Balls (why not) - National Lampoons Christmas Vacation (perfect combo)

Day 4) Frosted Lemon Treats - Elf

Day 3) Red & Green M&M - Muppets Christmas Carol

Day 2) Gingersnaps - White Christmas

Day 1) Oreo's - Little Women (i thought i would Balance the last day with Nick's favorite cookies going up against Jesse's pick)

Here are a few more cookie ideas if you choose to substitute them for one of my choices:

- Nancy Reagan's Coconut Macaroons
- Garbanzo Oat Flake Cookies
- Samoa's
- Oaxaca Tostada bites
- Rolled Molasses Cookies
- Spiced Almond Meringues
- Lard Cookies
- Almond Crescents
- Buffalo Chip Cookies
- Baci Di Dama (Orange Almond)
- Carrot Cookies (goes with A Christmas Story)
- Macadamia Nut Tartlets

Don't forget Santa Claus the Movie, and the Brady Bunch Christmas movie where there really is a miracle on 34th street. And Lord of the Rings just for kicks

I LOVE The Preacher's Wife with Denzel and Whitney Houston. That's a great Christmas movie. I always make gingerbread snickerdoodles. When I feel like cheating, I buy the Pillsbury premade gingerbread cookie dough, cut it off in slices, roll into a ball and roll around in a bowl of cinnamon and sugar. Are you going to the bridgebuilders cookie exchange? You'll get lots of good ideas there!

Everyone has listed my favorite old school Christmas movies except for the Sound of Music. I know it's not really a Christmas movie, but they always show it at Christmas time. My new absolute favorite one is Love Actually. I can't get enough of that movie for some reason. I love all sweet treats, but my mom made something different this year at Thanksgiving and it was sooo easy.
You melt almond bark (or actual chocolate), throw in dried cranberries and toasted pecans (or pretzels) and just stir it up and drop it onto aluminum foil to harden. I thought I would hate them, but they were so yummy!

It's a cruel joke hair grows on the knee to begin with. I've tried bending, straightening, and now just flat not shaving at all. Just kidding, Kevin. Seriously, let's get together and invent some contraption that gets hair off the knee with ease. Maybe it will pay my college loans??

*A great cheap way to celebrate is Holiday Follies at Highland! It's free of course, and very festive. It is early, so you start December feeling all Christmasy! Costco has great, cheap decor! Huge poinsettias for cheap, as well as beautiful live wreaths.

*I shave my knees, but not very well. That's just something that's gotta give. I always miss a spot.

*Book-Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. He is one of my favs. His last few books have disappointed me a little, but he really redeemed himself this time. I liked it b/c it was a great love story, but it was also a story of a man's love for his father, and how a man can grow and change. I have it, so you may borrow if you want to.

*Check out ABC family. They have 25 days of Christmas. They are showing a different X mas movie every day of December!

*I also like ornaments. We recently went from a mini-tree to a regular size, so I'm always glad to get one to take up more space. I usually buy ones from PB outlet, Cracker Barrel, and Hobby Lobby.

Cheapest way to celebrate: light a christmas-y smelly candle

Knees:For some reason my knees are easily shaveable.

Book: Celebration of Discipline (For my grad class, but quite good)

Movies not previously mentioned: Ernest saves Christmas

Favorite homemade gift to give or receive: I love when people give me those chocolate covered pecans in a bag. (uh-hum, Jean, hook me up with some of Josh's pecans again this year!)

Thanks for helping me get in the spirit!

Oh, and Christmas Vacation is BY FAR the best Christmas movie possible. I could do my top 12 quotes just from that movie! (I'd have to use some &%$# signs though!)

a fun christmas read this season is "Blue Christmas" by mary kay andrews. you can read it in a day or 2.

i always enjoy painting or drawing my own christmas postcards and then addressing them by the tree with a fun sparkly pen, a cuppa hot choco, and some fun christmas tunes. yeah, i'm a dork.

i'm fortunate to be blonde, so if i miss a spot on the knees then it's not a big deal!

snickerdoodles and real English Cadbury chocolate (none of that Hershey crap!) top the list of holiday desserts

as for the lights debate...I wanted color. I won cause I am in charge of decorating for holidays and if it were up to Dan, it may never be done. He fought it a while and then realised i cared more than he did. Also, lights are super cheap after christmas...just buy them cheap, have both and alternate years. :)
