I'll be the first one to say that Christmas is my favorite holiday.
I'm no Scrooge.
However, I think we have some hurry-sickness in today's Ameircan culture that is displaying itself in the form of skipping holidays. No, it's not Christmas-time, Target--Thanksgiving comes first. And while some people may hate that holiday because getting stuff isn't involved and it seems kind of boring, it happens to still exist. We don't decorate for Christmas in our house until Thanksgiving has passed. And that's the way it is. (And we could all do a little better looking forward to the holiday that celebrates being grateful, don't you think?)
But this leads me to my larger beef with Christmas. I won't even get started with the more serious sicknesses America has linked with this holiday. I'll let the video speak for itself...

haven't watched the video yet... but I will say that the Jerkins do NOT decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. not even a peep.
LOVE the type in this VIDEO! I am one hundred percent on board. Jamin and I are TOTALLY scaling back this Christmas with the gifts and I'm thrilled to do it. It's ridiculous how stressful it can get with kids, and then they totally miss the point. When they don't NEED a single thing. And another RANT is that we NEVER decorate before thanksgiving. its my PET PEEVE. UGH. be thankful first. GAH.
Goofy or pregnant, one of the two, but I actually got a little misty watching that video. I'm on board, too. We have had several conversations trying to decide how we will approach Christmas as a family, still making it special and communicating to each other that we love each other and want to bless each other with thoughtful gifts, but thinking outside our walls as well. I love the holiday and love trying to fill the house with decorations, delicious smells and memorable foods, but the hand-over-fist spending on things that no one really wants makes me sick.
I think it's even more apparent to those of us who have some mental images of other countries and how they live. Kids in Peru don't have a Santa Claus who comes down the chimney and leaves presents. The concept of guaranteed gifts is irrelevant to too many of them. And even one response - sending Christmas gifts for missionaries to distribute - might make a kid's day, but it doesn't change their life. Which should matter more?
I'll stop now, but I agree with you. I wish there was some way to reboot priorities across the board in regard to the season.

I LOVE this video. They showed it in our services a while back and our whole church is going to participate. Buddy is doing a month long sermon series on it too. So thankful for the people who put this together - such a great idea!
