No News is Good News

The above statement was a family motto when I was growing up, and I still live by its principles. So yes, friends, all is well. Exciting and busy times for the Farises. More to come soon.

In the meantime, I'll leave you with a little life-tidbit. Nick is looking for a youth ministry job and although now is "the time to buy" in terms of housing, for us it is "the time to keep renting." Our little house has been good to us through the years and the things I used to hate about it really don't bother me too much anymore. (And for those who have followed the story of "Little Ray," I am quite attached to him and can cook a mean dinner with his help!) When I first moved into this rented house, I purchased a hand-me-down long, black, modern couch (Thanks, Kyle & Larissa!). The black couch served us well over the years. We took our first "engaged" picture on that couch. I opened the box to my first MacBook on that couch. (Haha--I know it's funny that I view that as a landmark occasion.) We cuddled during movie nights on that couch. And most recently, Moses claimed the black couch as "his bed."

Well, it was time. With the help of an awesome sale at Pottery Barn Outlet, we purchased "our first couch." I've visited that outlet for years, looking for "my couch," and it was either not the right color or the right price or the right fabric or style. But a few weeks ago, we came upon "the one." I sat on it for probably an hour so no one else would buy it. When we paid for it, I told the cashier that this was "our first couch" we'd bought together. She said, "Awww, how long have you been married?" And she laughed, surprised, when I said, "Three years." HA. (She said she expected us to say "Three months"...)

We love it, and plan to love it for the next 20.
I have been hesitant to speak about the couch because we are very careful about not placing our worth in "things" and thinking life is about acquiring "stuff." But I can also say, that the new couch has completely changed the way our living room looks. It has breathed new life into my desire to make my house look nice. (Don't judge from above picture--I know the artwork and curtains have to change!) So here's to being happy with what you have, AND celebrating "firsts."

Congrats on the new couch, my friend! I'd say celebrating your first couch is more about a right of passage than a materialistic accomplishment. So, woohoo for you!! Love it, by the way :)

Another (unnecessary) first: Nick's pasty white inner thighs. Gross, and sorry everybody.

Yea for a new couch! It is a great color that you can add any type of accent to and it will look great. I say always buy a neutral couch and then you can accent with different color pillows, curtains, etc. It is much cheaper to buy new pillows and curtains when you want a new look instead of a new couch :)

It's perfect, Jesse!

I had forgotten that we sold you that couch. I think I have a vague memory of helping Nick haul it out of our apartment. I'm not even sure that it was originally black...I bet Larissa would know.

Glad you found a suitable upgrade.

The Nowlins have got you beat. We've been married over five years and still haven't bought "our first couch!" :) It looks fantastic! Congrats! I miss you!

Kyle, Yes, I'm pretty sure Larissa's mom (?) recovered it for y'all? Also, you can be happy that it now belongs to Laura Bontrager--not sure if you knew her, but she is a Highland member and my former roommate!

Anne, you may not have bought your first couch, but you HAVE bought your first couch AND had your first kid. Glad I beat you in something. ;) Miss you too, dear--let's get together soon!

I'm surprised that old thing had lasted this long. Love the new one! And I'm all about celebrating the things that make a place feel like YOUR home. Enjoy it!
